Some hairstylists are more like savvy politicians, telling us only what we want to hear. But Reiss is refreshingly honest. She gently rebuffed our idea of a flirty, layered cut, explaining that too many choppy pieces would give our thick hair “the shape of a mushroom.” Instead, she proposed lightening things up with a few tapering pieces just around our face, creating weightless definition. By the end, our formerly dense mop had bounce and sway, and Reiss had earned our vote of confidence.
